Artist in Oils

I have a passion for painting portraits but I enjoy the delights of Impressionism as relaxation, by using the surplus paint from the palette after a portrait. Between portraits I sketch in watercolour and sometimes very thin oil paint. I call these paintings/sketches experimental using new techniques with various types of new mediums and my own varnish.
As a reference, these sketches are useful in noting colour and shade in readiness for painting in oils - usually all for my own personal use. However, they have become very popular with friends and fellow artists and I have included just a few in the Galleries section which is divided into months.
I enjoy experimenting in tonal contrasts to determine different light and shade strengths for portraiture using alkyd fast drying paint mixed with surgical spirit as a thinning agent. Of course, I mix other agents to the colour for consistency making sure the hue remains opaque.
The pictures and drawings on this site are examples of my work and I will add further photos, in due course, spanning 45 years of creative design and painting.
Based in Lavenham, I am surrounded by history and beautiful countryside plus very 'big skies' which makes painting a joy.
Thank you for viewing my website...
